How We Re-Write the Story: Telling Fair and Balanced Narratives on Violence

Because understanding violence starts with understanding the story we tell about it
This report consists of a compilation of essays that address the key problems that we at Common Justice have seen regarding the media’s narrative on violence and crime. Through these essays, we understand the ways that mainstream outlets and individual media makers can reverse these narratives and paint a fuller, more nuanced picture of crime, violence, and safety that is transformative and healing. These essays are not only for media makers, they’re also for the vast majority of us — media consumers. Use these insights to recognize, critique, and at times push back against harmful news. We urge users to shift the narrative by reaching out to the media creators and informing them of how their content may be problematic. Follow up by supporting them with ideas for how they can change their content for the better.
